For Immediate Release:

Barre, VT (Aug. 10, 2016) Good Samaritan Haven is pleased to announce it has been selected to receive a $50,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation. The funds will support the organization’s Emergency Shelter and Basic Needs programs by increasing capacity to provide charitable meals and store perishable food.

Good Samaritan Haven is Central Vermont’s only homeless shelter, providing short-term emergency shelter and support services to individuals experiencing homelessness. Good Samaritan Haven operates an Emergency Shelter program with thirty beds. The shelter is located in Barre and is full nearly every night. The organization also operates a Seasonal Overflow Shelter at Hedding United Methodist Church during the winter with an additional fourteen beds. Each evening, a free dinner is provided for guests at both shelters.

Good Samaritan Haven has been successful acquiring food donations from community members and churches since the shelter opened in 1986. However, it has lacked the capacity to process and store large quantities of food donations. The organization will use the funding from the Walmart Foundation to expand the shelter’s kitchen and to purchase commercial grade appliances and refrigeration equipment.

“Good Samaritan Haven is thrilled and honored to be awarded funding from the Walmart Foundation. This donation will have a long-lasting impact on the Central Vermont community and will improve our ability to feed some of the region’s most vulnerable citizens,” said Brooke Jenkins, Executive Director.

“We are very happy to support Good Samaritan Haven in its mission to provide access to nutritious food for those in need throughout Central Vermont,” said Walmart Director of Public Affairs Jason Klipa. “Good Samaritan Haven is on the front lines helping Vermonters who struggle from meal to meal. Walmart is proud to partner with this vital organization.”

Good Samaritan Haven depends on community support to operate its shelter and to provide services to individuals who are experiencing homelessness.
